This started as an A- and now it’s struggling to keep itself at a C. Why is that 17 year old hoping the 14 year old who may be his half sister isn’t related to him cus he has a crush on her? Why is the 18 year old also obviously into the 14 year old???? There is nothing to be gained by creating a love triangle? Especially a creepy one.

Halfway through watching The Other Bennet Sister and practically foaming at the mouth waiting for friends to be available to finish it. This is self medication to get me through.

Shifting POVs that are all interesting and good and original world building? I’ve been in such a slump and this is going to save me.

Part two has captured my attention!

Obviously there was the vaguest of foreshadows or I would not have picked up enough to even make the joke. But I’m annoyed that I was right tbh.

I think im gonna be right about that throw away joke prediction about Excalibur and that’s hilarious.

Unserious guess at what could be a plot twist later on: is the random crusty sword Jenny mentioned once in passing gonna be Excalibur? Is that why the Erl King is in this apparently unimportant little village? Is Jenny’s lake Avalon? Probably not but what a thing.

This was described as a spinster plot/made out to be a whimsical/girl power vibe. I was not expecting domestic violence and asylums. Anyway, the whole thing is this woman has a magical garden that’s kinda sentient. Can Harriet use the magical garden to poison this man? I’d also be fine with ivy invading all the holes in his body until he suffocates on the invasive vine and then explodes. That would be cool too.

How has this slipped through the cracks for so long? Uncanny Folk Creature protagonist? I love Jenny Greenteeth. I love magical old hags. BIG FAN of carnivorous water fae/spirits.

I keep reading this before bed and I know it is supposed to be dramatic and adventurous for kids, but as a 33 year old it is just cozy and charming and I get sleepy and content and ready for sleep after like 10 pages.

I prefer Kingfisher’s horror to her fantasy and this isn’t an exception. The story is well researched and the plot pace ticks every box, for me. My only gripe so far (as usual tbh) is for a historical horror, the voice of the protagonist sounds like a girl with a blog and an iPhone. I thought it was just the narrator, but I think it’s word choice and communication style also.

What does it say about me that even in the face of a town knowingly accepting an old god periodically abducting their children…the one I’m most irritated with is the priest meddling in the funeral rights and trying to shove Jesus at them???

So this is deeply disturbing and fucked up in the incredible way that only happens in truly good folk horror. The body horror/graphic gore is already a million time more intense than any of Homie’s other books though and I’m only on chapter 8 of 45.

We love when a uk release date means the audiobook is out in the US 6 months before the US release date.

As a child this would have felt so serious and perilous. As an adult Im charmed by how campy it is. It’s making me nostalgic for being a little nine year old kid discovering epic/high fantasy.

Started reading this series because Tamsyn Muir loosely based Mathias Nonias off of this series and I was curious. I have had mouse Matthias, with his robes and his too big sandals for two chapters and already I feel deeply protective of this guy. This is my little guy.

I let myself think this would be dinosaur adventure stories and that’s my bad. Cus of course dinosaurs are actually just the vehicle for metaphors about the sanctity of childhood wonder. This is Ray we are talking about. (Other than A Sound of Thunder) Still incredible though.

I wish I knew why I am such a sucker for a sailor story.

Gotta love a character whose superiors refer to her as “combative, defiant, and unduly pedantic.” Neema Kraa, you are my hero.

I had to pause this audio book at a minute in so I could laugh and take a breath. Whoever this character is, I love them. The narration is great too.

The oscillation between third person limited to an omniscient first person (we) is so masterfully done. I love a puzzle and a locked room mystery and incredibly complicated character dynamics.
