Charlie's IQ is 185. He gets fired from the bakery and his relationship with Alice falls apart due to the IQ difference. He hops on a plane to Chicago for the conference. He is accused of rape by a woman. He recalls a similair experiment he went through as a child to become smarter.

As Charlie gets smarter, he starts recalling more about his childhood and realizes that people in his life have been mistreating him. His spelling improves and he begins to have sexual/romantic thoughts about Ms Kinnian as well as anger/shame for how he was treated in the past; Treats his past self as a different person. Charlie gets promoted to baker and learns that Gimp has been stealing from Mr.Donner.

Charlie undergoes the procedure but is upset with the results. He wishes to become smarter immediately so he can prove himself to others.

Charlie Gordon is a 32 year old man with an IQ of 68. Through self-written progress reports, he talks about different experiments he is going through. He has been recommended by his teacher, Alice Kinnian to be the subject for a surgery to increase intelligence. Charlie is highly motivated to become smarter and is approved for the surgery.

Dona Flor and her friends learn that the mysterious suitor, is a scammer, causing Flor to become embarrassed. Flor struggles with feelings of guilt over her sexual desires. The ladies learn that a quiet doctor, Teodoro has a crush on Flor and he eventually proposes to her.

This is a year after Vadinhos death

Dona Flor recalls more memories of Vadinho. Book time-skips to 1 month after his passing, then to 6, then 8. The ladies in the neighborhood predict that Dona Flor will get remarried again soon to a dark skinned man in his 40s. A man begins to watch Flor who somewhat matches the description, though he is a scammer who targets widows.

Book goes over the courtship between Vadinho and Flor. Vadinho helps Flor's friend Celia get a job, but this leads to everyone finding out that he lied about his past. He and Flor have sex and get eloped. Goes over their marriage, Flor's infertility and her first days of widowhood.

The book goes over Dona Rozilda's life after the death of her husband Gil(Dona Flor's parents) and how she sought to marry her daughters off to rich men. Book begins to go into how Flor met Vadinho.

So far, Dona Flor's husband Vadinho has died during carnival. Learned that he wasn't the best husband and would use their money to gamble and cheated on her alot. First couple chapters introduce characters and goes over Dona Flor's and other characters immediate reaction to his death.

The book focuses on the inner turmoil and thoughts of Louis Claret and Alexandre Laudin. So far, their relationship has seemingly grown during sessions where Laudin paints Claret. They begin to "tutoyer" (refer to each other with informal language) though Laudin switches between using vous and tu

Build up is a little slow, first part of book focuses on world-building and detailing the relationships between different characters in the town of Ilhéus.
