Dona Flor and Teodoro get married. Goes over their courtship. To protect her honor, they only see each other 3 times a week with a third party. Flor's desire for Teodoro grows.

Dona Flor and her friends learn that the mysterious suitor, is a scammer, causing Flor to become embarrassed. Flor struggles with feelings of guilt over her sexual desires. The ladies learn that a quiet doctor, Teodoro has a crush on Flor and he eventually proposes to her.

This is a year after Vadinhos death

Dona Flor recalls more memories of Vadinho. Book time-skips to 1 month after his passing, then to 6, then 8. The ladies in the neighborhood predict that Dona Flor will get remarried again soon to a dark skinned man in his 40s. A man begins to watch Flor who somewhat matches the description, though he is a scammer who targets widows.

Book goes over the courtship between Vadinho and Flor. Vadinho helps Flor's friend Celia get a job, but this leads to everyone finding out that he lied about his past. He and Flor have sex and get eloped. Goes over their marriage, Flor's infertility and her first days of widowhood.

The book goes over Dona Rozilda's life after the death of her husband Gil(Dona Flor's parents) and how she sought to marry her daughters off to rich men. Book begins to go into how Flor met Vadinho.

So far, Dona Flor's husband Vadinho has died during carnival. Learned that he wasn't the best husband and would use their money to gamble and cheated on her alot. First couple chapters introduce characters and goes over Dona Flor's and other characters immediate reaction to his death.
