There's nothing memorable about the characters and yet I have to finish the story. I can't stop reading (watching), which is the whole point of the story and divisive of the author.

It's messy, it's not that deep, we turn away thinking, "That's crazy", and move on without being affected, and yet if this was IRL, we'd just watch humans die and go through this experience, but their emotions and story are just like

Lots of characters I am struggling to keep up with but the writing is strong, so I feel I am not drowning, but floating with the story

Mer-them (now first time hu-them) asks the universe's noise level to "...turn down" which led me to the question, how and why does a fish-person know this very 21st century, human-experience phrasing???? Are there TVs and radios underwater???? Are there volume controls underwater???? How did an editor let this pass?
