Soooo things have taken a turn... Safe to say I am intrigued and I’m glad I kept reading!!

Considering there is so much truth, science, and theory woven into the story, this book makes you think in a way that other fantasy novels don’t. It reads as a classic would with similar language, style, and pacing. Oh but good news - there are women attending Univ in this story which I guess means there are fantastical elements after all.

I was a little stunned at first based on the writing style and a young man pov. Upon reflection, silly me, of course there were no women attending Oxford University in 19th century England. Bold of me to assume…

ugh I love love; even though it can be terrible and bottomless

Wow things really took a turn and I feel so many things - mostly sadness and compassion for these characters. There is a coming of age feeling to turning where you can’t tell exactly when reality hits you that life isn’t what you thought it would be. Almost like the death of a prior self but there is more to it than that.

this is more vibes than plot but I’ll read about ethereal, whimsical, man-hating vampire women all day long

Still loving this so much… I wish more people were talking about this or recommending this book! It is literally a work of art…

this story is beautiful and heartbreaking and amazing and devastating all at the same time… viewing the world over centuries through Addie’s eyes is painful, hopeless, discouraging, and above all things, lonely, until she meets Henry because Henry actually remembers… he’s the first other than the dark god she made the deal with in three centuries who actually remembers

This is absolutely transportive and completely immersive. We go from the past to the present and back again as we follow Addie’s journey from when she made an irreversible bargain with the wrong god to where she is now centuries later. This is my first v.e. Schwab book and I love her writing style and descriptions! Excited to read more!

So far this book has so much in it! The glimpses of what life was like in Spain’s Golden Age, the sexism and ruthless prejudices that women endured during this era, the almighty power that Christianity and Catholicism portrayed, how magic is portrayed as a gift from God, and the life of a Jew amongst this Christianization. Excited to read more!
