This is one of the books that really helps me to break the code to the Catcher in the Rye. Discovered who Haas was...."Arnold’s men found that one company, Rohm & Haas of Philadelphia, was not able itself to produce enough transparent plastic sheets for bomber noses. ...."

In England, the government had made education compulsory. Many pupils had no desire to be educated.

I do not, and will not; they won't and they don't; and that's all!
I shall keep my strength for myself; they can keep theirs as well.
Why should we beat our heads against the wall
Of each other? I shall sit and wait for the bell.

Just read To His Coy Mistress, by Andrew Marvell. I was amazed that it reminded me of Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Also The Catcher in The Rye where Holden talks about sex and playing them like a fiddle...and the whole thing is about war.

This part was heart breaking. The corruption, the black market, the confiscation the famine...and on top if this you had parents selling their babies. But they were completely at the mercies of their masters...the State. They could not defend themselves. They we're as helpless a a slave on a plantation. In fact they were worse off.

I bought this book a long time ago. It was in at a time where I was interested in all things Japanese. It was on sale too. But I only got around to reading it now. I am kinda glad that I waited because I just got through reading Snow Country and this book is adding to my understanding of the book. Also I am feel more involved in Japan rather than just reading a novel.

I admit that I just let this book pour over me. I find things of interest like finding a pretty pebble on the beach. Some times it is funny. Sometime shocking. But life and the book go on.

This has been better than I thought it would be. I think it will pair well with reading Solar History as it has a lot of the same time frames of history in it. It is very easy to listen to. Story like but without being talked down to.

My husband is wondering how I can listen to this...full of statistics. No different than listening to the weather. It is fascinating and crushing what China had to endure because they gave their power over to a few men that played god. Communism is the ultimate narcissistic social control. Where we have installed it here in the US...in our schools and social programs, and even agriculture...we have reaped chaos.
