So, I picked this specifically as a feminist piece. The title makes it clear that’s what it’s going to be. Because of this, I feel kind of weird saying that I don’t know how to evaluate the work because it’s not made for me. I knew going in that it wasn’t “for” me but I think feminist voices and stories are so so important that I wanted to engage with it.

I feel almost guilty reading this as a man.

I’ve clearly reached the point where the author turns. For some reason he has switched to a CinemaSins style takedown of Mary Poppins and now a deconstruction of Disney’s public image in a jarring tonal shift.

The author’s thesis is that this book isn’t like the other Disney bios that are either too positive or too critical. This one will be down-the-middle and will correct common mistakes of the others. Through Chapter 1, this correction largely plays out as pointing out rather minor errors in other works in an “Ummmm, ACTUALLY” kind of way and otherwise getting some small jabs at Walt in.

The rest of the book was so staunchly chronological that the more topical structure of chapter 6 took some time to get used to
