Wow, I’m obsessed and heartbroken and in love. I was already enjoying the colonialism analysis in Babel and this is equally incredible. Mukasonga says things everyone’s thoughts of or been passively aware of but in such away that ignorance can no longer save one from the reality that is society. Wow.

That they were, in the end, only vessels for the languages they spoke.” The only value of the bag is the contents in which it carries. They are just all convenient bags. We are.

A child with no affinity for colour bc he's never been allowed blessing of seeing it. Only colours are not those of life but death. Black for smoke left by bombings, Red for the blood that flooded the streets. That is all this child knows. Not the blue of the sky he throws to the floor when his mother tries to give it to him: just black and red. Just smoke and blood. This is the extent of this child's worldview.

Really enjoying the lack of melodrama, considerations of methods are the same mundanity of one considering their lunch order which really resonates with me.

The blind agony of finding rejection form the place in which you’d been sold the dream of acceptance & belonging; I have not an English word that can describe the severity of what is lost so I will borrow the German: Geborgenheit.
Realising that regardless of the effort one dedicates oneself to, they are ultimately ‘other’ & their identity lies only in the alienation of their own skin. Treachery in existence.

Just filled with madmen, why have we all met a St John in our lives? I pray I never bare the misfortune of encountering a St John ever again.

This is so enthralling, I feel like an abandoned newborn bird that is imprinting upon the kind human that saved me and I’ve therefore now assumed to be my mother. The kind human being this book if that was not clear.
