I can see this betrayal coming from across the Atlantic.

But noooo, not our main girl, our oblivious heroine, who believes in completely self-sacrificing friends and has no pattern recognition skills whatsoever.

She might be a Mary Sue.

Onward because the book is still really good so far.

S t r u g g l I n g to get through to the end. No more bundled book series from Audible.

I usually happily DNF books/series like this, but the plot is actually good (there is only one, though) and I do want to know what happens. I skimmed through the last two books to get here. I can’t believe how hatable the characters are. Nearly all of them. “Flame, flames, on the side of my face…"

I’m consistently thrown off by the British English words and phrases in this book because the main characters are from and in The States. Kerb instead of curb, pyjamas for pajamas, aircon instead of air conditioner, THE Ukraine instead of Ukraine etc. It’s almost like the 4th wall is broken and some suspension of disbelief is lost over and over.

“But all wilderness had some everlasting impact on her, and it didn’t matter how many times she returned. The isolation of the woods haunted and astounded her as it had the first time, distantly familiar, like she’d once been rooted in a grove in another life.”

I already know that I’m going to be unhappy with how this ends. The author has sacrificed the main character with uncharacteristic stupidity twice. This time, Pip gives the police DNA evidence by taking a sip of the coffee brought to her in an interrogation room and leaves it. Having your main character fall into every single trope is not good.

Losing empathy for Pip as she continues to cry over and defend a serial child murderer.

Currently contemplating whether or not I can force myself to finish this series. Or even finish this novella. SJM characters just suck the will right out of me to give them any more of my attention.

Really, Fayre? You’ll let your ex-abuser victim-blame tf out of you, but a close friend holds you accountable for lying and you go in for the emotional kill on her?!?! Do better, ffs.

This is excruciating so far. There’s very little substance. It’s all about the author. I’ll finish it, but I’ll likely return it unless there’s something useful to walk away with in the second half.

She calls herself a researcher, but I have yet to hear about any actual research or evidence or data, even. This is the outdated feminism of our mothers and grandmothers.
