The technology didn’t begin to become even slightly useful to consumers until the late 1980s, when IBM created a computer that could kind of take dictation. It knew a few thousand words, and if you spoke them very slowly and clearly in unaccented English, it would show them to you on the screen. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t really catch on.

Things really pick up when you get to Judges, Samuel and Kings. The Biblical historical record is more easily correlated with other sources, more detailed maps are possible and some of the most well-known stories of the Old Testament are put into context (David, Solomon, Jezebel, Samson, Elijah...)

To have despair'd, have hoped, believed, And be for evermore beguiled, - Sometimes with thoughts of very bliss! I catch at them, and then I miss; Was ever darkness like to this?

I dread writing a review for this book. There is a clear discrepancy between what the book (meaning it's individual essays) claim to be about and the actual tone and theme of the thing.
