Ok, I'll admit that initially I was struggling with the existence of a character named Saetan Daemon SaDiablo, High Lord of Hell, but actually this is fire and I am INVESTED.

Oh come on, you can't be telling me the Most Powerful Dude Of All The Dudes named his sons Mephis and...Peyton.

This book is like a fever dream. Two pages into chapter 1 and some dude is already getting his nuts gnawed by rats.

I'm not the most critical little muffin when I'm reading, but even I am like "what the fuck?" at this plan to go through the Meridian Pass, a place seemingly designed for ambushes, in order to avoid...being ambushed while in a larger crowd? Does the author not understand why travellers used to group themselves together in caravans?

The writing in this isn't *bad*, per se, but it's certainly not good.

I hope this picks up, because currently I'm underwhelmed.

Oh look, the plot has finally arrived.

I'd be more inclined to believe that 'that cringing girl had perished' if Effy's actions so far didn't paint her as a cringing girl.

This book is very wet. The setting, the characters... Barely a tenth in and I already want to tell Effy to bloody well pull herself together.

Somehow I had this confused with the other ST Gibson book about the ménage à quatre so let's just say it's *not* what I was expecting...

I'm going for that whole slack-jawed, "what the fuck" kind of look today.

I guess the author is to be congratulated on writing a story where the piracy is the least interesting thing.

Now I'm all for world-appropriate cursing, but the use of 'pit' here is just so clunky in places.
