red rows the clapboard shells her reading eye slid swallowing solemnly as if she'd just been told of someone's love, not for her, no, for the sea nearby in Bishop's poems, a slow wash of words on a beach hissing like fat in the flame, brief flare-up before final smoke

Every profession is a conspiracy against the public, every profession protects itself with a language of its own, look at that psychiatrist they’re sending me to, ever try to read a balance sheet? ..Like the dog
cornering his prey till it all evaporates into language confronted by
language turning language itself into theory till it’s not about what it’s about it’s only about itself turned into a mere plaything

I'm trying, I'm really really trying, but McElroy is just not clicking for me. I'll keep working through his catalog until something gives because I want to at least say I like his writing before starting his 1200 page opus. I have Ancient History, Cannonball, and Hind's Kidnap on my shelf if anyone has a recommendation for which may help me begin to appreciate McElroy.

Jackson is starting The Iliad of Homer
Tackling some of the heavy hitters in the western literary canon (Iliad, Odyssey, Bible) this year in hopes of deepening my understanding and enriching my experience with every other book ever written. Certain works are so often alluded to in literature that they seem like spiritual prequels to every other book ever written. How I would’ve loved to have read the Recognitions having read the Bible beforehand.

Cinematic, but not in the traditional sense. Cartwright looks back on his life, endlessly hopping from memory to memory, through a filtered lens; there is a cold disconnect, the film captures the image, nothing more. The narrator seems to describe and recount his whole life as if it happened to someone he has never met. Impressive but not the greatest reading experience, I am struggling to get through this.
