Interesting to read the worries about the “feminization” of society in the latter decades of the nineteenth century, with the rise of women’s literature and women’s civic organizations, such as the temperance movement.

Every time society is undergoing significant changes due to economic upheavals (in this case, the Industrial Revolution), the mainstream gets into a panic and starts kicking down.

Between the two books in the series so far, I’ve never encountered such fascinating depictions of contact between multiple species from such different origins (genetically speaking). It feels truly alien, and yet all relatable. I’m fascinated both with the cooperation between the Portiids and humans, and with how things will progress with this new encounter. Marvelous SciFi!
