Interesting to read the worries about the “feminization” of society in the latter decades of the nineteenth century, with the rise of women’s literature and women’s civic organizations, such as the temperance movement.

Every time society is undergoing significant changes due to economic upheavals (in this case, the Industrial Revolution), the mainstream gets into a panic and starts kicking down.
