This book is DENSE!! Really good, but dense.

Oh, lawdy… I needed this book after the dense, challenging (punishing?) non-fiction I just finished. 90 minutes into this and I’ve already cried 3x. Bless this old man from Portugal!!

OMG. This is very dense subject matter, and while the author has done her research and knows (and obviously cares for) her subject, I am unable to multitask while listening. I cannot do anything except listen to the book. If my mind wanders on a topic tangential to her text for even a moment, I’m lost and must replay the previous minutes. I’ve even slowed down the narration in order not to miss anything. Dang!!

I feel a 2-star rating coming on… this book is pretty boring. It seems like so much self-indulgent teenage wistful angst. The POV character’s BFF is a mostly-unlikeable sociopath who nevertheless has POV character bewitched. I’ll bet the author IRL probably had a few interesting anecdotes about her younger years, told some people who encouraged her write them down, and then out pops this book.
