Halfway through. I'm loving all the history and characters. Just wish it was chronological. Had to start a chapter summary by year so I could remember. Otherwise excellent.

This is one case of the movie being better than the book. I am struggling thru this. It is like reading a badly written, extremely detailed history textbook.... ugh...

"Everything was starting to feel springy except my parents, Who were entering the haggard phase of text season. The gray stripe in my mother's hair was getting wider, and I hadn't seen my father clean-shaven for days and days. Greta and I were on the verge of stew poisoning, which, we used to say, is when your blood actually turns into gravy."

Slogging my way through this. The only reason I will force myself to finish it is because I must do a book review on it.

When Sherman made his famous march to the sea from Atlanta to Savannah, his army actually grew in number, because thousands of white Southerners volunteered along the way. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of the Confederate army opposing Sherman disappeared through desertion. 18,000 slaves also joined Sherman, so many that the army had to turn some away.

In each of the last two centuries America’s most popular novel was set in slavery—Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. The two books tell very different stories: Uncle Tom’s Cabin presents slavery as an evil to be opposed, while Gone With the Wind suggests that slavery was an ideal social structure whose passing is to be lamented.

a money-box was kept on the kitchen mantel-shelf, in to which it was publicly made known that all my earnings were dropped. I have an impression that they were to be contributed eventually towards the liquidation of the National Debt, but I know I had no hope of any personal participation in the treasure.

Looking forward to reading MY ANTONIA and rereading THE GREAT GATSBY. Justification to never open MOBY DICK or hope of understanding poetry.

New characters are still being introduced and I feel like the plot is just starting to thicken. I don't love it--yet.

The thing that makes this book difficult is that each character has a first and last name and then an entirely different name that they go by. And there are lots of characters. Other than that it is pretty easy. Not very interesting yet. I hope it picks up.

Page 500. About 350 more to go. Loving every bit of it. Wish I had a better memory of everything in the past books.

The characters in this story are all selfish, mean, and brutal... how can this lead to a redeeming conclusion? Maybe it doesn't. Took 50 pages just to get the family tree down. Tough beginning, but moving along ok now.

Never read this before. Don't know anything about it except it is some gothic/victorian romance/hate/ghost story. Not my cup of tea, but I am giving it a try. Hope I am as pleasantly surprised by it as I was by JANE EYRE.

The first job little negro boys had was to sit on the front porch of the plantation and shoo away the roosters and turkeys from the lawn! Loving this book. Lots of new vocab words.
