I’m stressing TF out because I know how this book ends but I don’t remember how exactly it happens this is so nerve wracking

I feel like the only reason I’m enjoying this is bc it’s sapphic bc otherwise I would think it’s WAAAAAY too similar to Jayne eyre. Also, random gripe, but the author should be using UK spelling if we’re in England.

This book is quite confusing in that it has the world building, plot tropes, and hero-squad vibe of a children’s novel, but then occasional adult elements that make you forget no, this is actually YA?? But the characters are in their late 20s?

Going to force myself to finish since I’m almost done, and possibly the first Goodreads reviewer of this book, which feels like a Guinness record.

This might be a DNF for me. There’s a lot that doesn’t make sense: the MC’s decisions on money and her day to day actions, the orphan aspect that is only referenced and so feels less impactful, and why (as a non-Canadian) the Canadian intelligence agency is absolutely evil in this book. This book also overstates the obvious at times instead of letting metaphors speak for themselves.

The narrator is a bit unlikable I fear

Super interesting concept, but the pacing is SO fast, especially for a dystopian book. I almost feel more like I’m reading a short story w how quick the exposition is. Also, this book REALLY needs some paragraph transitions

Ehh, I’ve already guessed the plot twist a ways out from the reveal. This book got significantly less interesting after the flashbacks ended, but maybe the final 25% will redeem it. Also, a surprising number of grammatical and word placement errors for a book this close to publishing

The writing style/voice differs a lot from the main character’s inner dialogue vs how she speaks w some other characters — it’s throwing me off a bit. very pretty settings, though. this book kind of needed an intro world building chapter, like a legend or something, to give a crash course to ppl unfamiliar w Chinese mythology, but I’m just enjoying the vibes for now

Let this book be a lesson to always read 2-3 pages before you buy. Goodreads reviews and the plot premise got me interested in this book, but the writing is genuinely so cliche I don’t know if I’ll finish it :/
