Real life may suck sometimes, but at least there’s fictional sapphics meeting their partner’s loving and supportive parent and immediately being welcomed into the family 🥹 This is always one of my favorite moments in danmei/baihe (thinking of Mo Du)—when one character who’s never known parental love is immediately accepted and loved by their partner’s parents. It just warms my heart.

Lin Yan is mean, she’s petty, cold-hearted, impulsive, cocky, self-centered, she’s a bully, she’s a tease, she’s rude and ungrateful, vengeful—

and I love her.

I’ve only been reading historical novels for the past couple of months so it took me a minute to remember that fictional characters can have cell phones and drive cars 😂 But this crime novel has officially found their first body and the investigation is underway with women in the lead leeettttt’s gooooo

Honestly if this weren’t based around a cat I probably would dnf. It’s not bad, but it’s not holding my attention strongly. Really just staying for the true-to-nature cat antics at this point 🙃

Around chapter 230, I finally could see the end of the story, kinda like standing at the top of a mountain and seeing your path down.

But here I am, chapter 257, and the mountain somehow keeps getting bigger even as I get closer to the end….

Luckily it’s all been worth the effort though 🥹

I’ve rarely had such conflicting feelings about a protagonist before—I support her fully, love to see her get revenge, but also feel like she’s morally black and has gone over the line too many times to forgive. Stories with similarly contradictory MCs usually fall flat to me, but in this, I love that I have such conflicting feelings about Qi Yan. It’s complex and it just works.

jesus this book is good

I've been meaning to pick this up ever since I finished Female General and Eldest Princess yearrrrrs ago, but always put it off. NO LONGER. So excited to hop into this, and I'm already loving the world it's crafting.

Bit on the fence about this one, but at the end of the day it’s still lesbians with swords so

I’ve just finished this and I have lots of thoughts but am mostly speechless/drained and can’t put thoughts into words at the moment 🙃 review to come later. But as an overall summation:

The horse was the best character. Benxiao ftw. 🐎

An entire chapter of boys just being boys—getting drunk, cussing out each others’ families, wrestling shirtless. Solid reminder that Duan Ling is, in fact, still a teenager.

Every single time when it’s a matter of life and death, you always appeared at my side. It’s probably what destiny had in store for us.

Trying hard not to be fooled by another “joyful reunion” here, but each one is so beautifully and emotionally written 🥹

Fake dating is not a favorite trope of mine, but I am SITTING. I am INVESTED in these women and their silly little let’s-pretend-we’re-dating-but-actually-fall-in-love antics

I’ve never really met anyone that seems to want to get to know me the way you do.

This one took me a while to get into—neither character is very likable from the get-go—but it’s just starting to get good and I’m finally liking both Emma and Regan and curious to see how they grow and develop throughout the book

He both rides the late emperor’s horse and mounts the late emperor’s son, so naturally, he’s not going to think very highly of a bunch of army thugs.

My pace has slowed wayyyyy down on this and I’m starting to struggle with picking it up. I think we’re finally moving into the next big arc, but there was a lot of slow moving downtime in between then and now. Curious to see what’s coming in the next arc!

This reads like every other contemporary romance I’ve ever read, but I wanted sapphic Christmas and I’m getting sapphic Christmas so 🎄

No spoilers plzzz! Each separation in this book hurts like hell, but I’m hoping there’s a time jump coming up soon just to give Duan Ling time to mature and not be so reliant on every older male he meets as a father figure. He feels too immature still for me to root for his romantic endeavors. I’m loving the character dev and its pacing, but he just needs a bit of solitary growth so he’s not codependent

This is my first Fei Tian Ye Xiang novel, and I’m really impressed with the complexity of emotion weaved into the story so far. There’s a lot of innocence & really wholesome interactions between Duan Ling and his parental figures, but at the same time there’s a war brewing and we’re given both a child’s perspective and adults’ perspectives of these heavier themes. The balance has been phenomenal.
