Lots of inner homophobia, self contempt and hatred. I think Giovanni’s room is an allegory of the soul and how it can only be freed and trapped by love. Like his room is a mess and he relies on David to help free himself from this disarray. And David does that by cleaning the mess up however how hard he tried he doesn’t find pleasure in doing so and is constantly hating himself and Giovanni.
