I just finished Nine Lives: Death and Life in New Orleans and gave it 5 stars.

Amazing so far.

This book is a wonder. I am defensive of the South, but the narrative is both probing and respectful, and accesses people and opinions that I never had the courage to find myself in the years that I lived in South Carolina. I have frequently found myself stopping to absorb ideas before I move on to the next chapter.

I just love this book so far. I think this could be a five-star book for me.

I will reread this book every year until I'm sick of it. It gets me so thrilled for camping season to begin again!

Recommended to me by my dad, who has excellent taste in books! Riveting so far.

Totally engrossing.

Even though southern Utah has become much more developed since this book was written, the landscape hasn't really changed. It reminds me very much of why I chose to settle in beautiful Utah.

Oh my god, Elizabeth, Mr Wickham is so obviously a scoundrel, and Mr Darcy is obviously not - quit being so daft.

A real page-turner, loving it so far.

Was expecting a slow-moving book based on reviews, but find the pages turning quickly. Really enjoying the writing a lot.

Blown. Away.

Already, this book has been an incredible affirmation for me. Being an introvert often feels like a crime - "you might still feel a pang of guilt when you decline a dinner invitation in favor of a good book. Or maybe you like to eat alone in restaurants and could do without the pitying looks from fellow diners." I feel an enormous sense of relief in the recognition of the fact there's nothing wrong with me.

This book brings to light the remarkable achievements of the Pilgrims. The many obstacles they overcame to settle in New England are mind-boggling. Can you imagine landing in New England in November with not a soul to help you, raising a settlement by hand throughout the winter, and negotiating peace with multiple native tribes, despite the fact that they speak a different language? Amazing.

So far, the second installment doesn't disappoint!

So far I've read SC, WI, and UT. Such small portraits are bound to leave out many details, so I feel a bit indignant when reading about places to which I'm closely tied. Still very good so far, though, and looking forward to states I don't know so well.

This is an excellent book. I've already begun recommending it my friends.

So far, this book has really brought to life a topic that I'm not usually interested in - fish. It's part travelogue, part conservation plea, and part practical fishing knowledge. Really interesting.

I feel like the story trudges a little bit, but overall it's pretty masterful.
