A month ago I said I was worried the allegory had breached containment. Since then I have read 12 other books instead of continuing my ascent through purgatory, a book that is quite literally warning me about getting distracted on the ascent.

Unfortunately I have become the allegory. Dante has made his point. I will be returning to the mountain shortly.

As someone who normally reads 4 to 7 books a month, I regret to report that after nearly a month in Purgatory, I have only just escaped Ante-Purgatory and begun the ascent. I’m beginning to worry the allegory has breached containment.

dante’s range is insane. in the span of 3 pages, he goes from “the fire of love can satisfy the debt of divine justice” to roasting the church, dragging half the politicians in italy, and saying “fuck florence” with the most violent literary sarcasm imaginable. profound spite may be my new favorite genre.

after doing the math i am reading at a brisk 5–6 pages per hour, which feels thematically appropriate for purgatory

it took me two hours to read 16 pages, during which i laughed at a 14th-century fart joke set in the 8th circle of hell💀

yesterday: page 72
today: page 50
the henry francis cary translation has forced me to accept that my first descent into hell will include backtracking 💀

read only 10 pages today, further confirming that I am correct to log inferno, purgatorio, and paradiso separately. the full divine comedy deserves to count as 3 books toward my reading goal

The audiobook is sooo good, but I just ordered the physical book because some of the science stuff is going over my head without seeing it on the page lol. Also, we love Rocky.
