written by a barrister rather than a political scientist or a historian (should have paid more attention before buying it) = I’m distrustful of his sources + the structure of the writing is confusing

but maybe the content really is historically relevant? and perhaps too specific for someone who hasn’t studied Irish History to understand?

the author wants to prove he read loads of documents and makes a point of quoting them way too often in painfully long paragraphs 🤌
and the way he cuts chapters makes you think he wanted to write a crime novel but had to do non-fiction/History instead

ok, there should have been two books: a prequel and a sequel. Waaaaay too much info that isn’t well developed or foreshadowed

“she was very attractive” sounds like a robot or a 19th-century-like euphemism. It just doesn’t sound genuine

a lot of exposition, so it feels novice, especially the bits about 1920’s Paris. Opaline doesn’t feel real. It’s like she’s a character from a mid rom-com. More emphasis could have been put on the fact both she and Martha wish to escape from men who want to control them and their lives.

absolutely mental but also wonderfully funny and absurd
(I do have to re-read quite a few paragraphs though)
