Hi, progressive-thinking friends? We're getting creamed in the marketplace of ideas bc conservatives have figured out how to master the art of framing. READ THIS BOOK then pass it along to every smart, progressive person you know. Latest ed. came out in 2014 - my copy is only 123 pgs - a quick read that will blow your mind and pump up your game.

I think I'll pass on ever reading the late 50s title Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane --- the premise of almost every story is Supes/Clark playing some trick on Lois that is meant to teach her a lesson on how to behave better... blech

I cannot find anything I'd want to read for the "food memoir" category of BookRiot's Read Harder challenge. I'm thinking of reading Chew instead and calling it a day. Thoughts? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

f___________ck! This whole essay, In Defense of Saccharin(e), made my mouth water, it was so good. "We dismiss sentimentality in order to construct ourselves as arbiters of artistry and subtlety."

>>> check out this rant by @lunulata re: the truth about over-sexualizing women as the norm in comics art -- misogyny aside, y'all are just plain boring and predictable. She asks how little imagination an artist gotta have to fall back on the same scantily clad bodies in provacative poses over n over again. Yawn! >>> http://myprettyissuper.tumblr.com/pos...

"The men where you live," said the little prince, "raise five thousand roses in the same garden-- and they do not find in it what they are looking for."

"They do not find it," I replied.

"And yet what they are looking for could be found in one single rose, or in a little water."

"Yes, that is true," I said.

And the little prince added: "But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart..."

This water was indeed a different thing from ordinary nourishment. Its sweetness was born of the walk under the stars, the song of the pulley, and the effort of my arms. It was good for the heart, like a present.

He was an absolute monarch.  But, because he was a very good man, he made his orders reasonable.

"If I ordered a general," he would say, by way of example, "if I ordered a general to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not obey me, that would not be the fault of the general.  It would be my fault."

"Ah!  Here is a subject," exclaimed the king, when he saw the little prince coming.

And the little prince asked himself:   "How could he recognize me when he had never seen me before?"

He did not know how the world is simplified for kings.  To them, all men are subjects.

This narrator (rather, the voice of the faux-memoir at the center of this book) is so fascinatingly arrogant, I can't believe he's the scientist we will be relying on for insight into another culture! His judgements on the family/people of his early life make me conclude that he must have been an intolerable shmuck. An asshole, but a compelling asshole.

I'm in the middle of the first issue, admiring the Jim Lee pretty as I go, in all of its magnificent detail... then I get to our first glimpse of Lois who is wearing a tiny hooker dress that literally looks painted on... in the middle of the newsroom. WTF? Totally took me out of the story. Will try again tomorrow.

"In my opinion--we're the raw materials for a scientific experiment, for an international laboratory. There are 10 million Belarussians, and 2 million of us live on poisoned land. It's a huge devil's laboratory... People come to us from everywhere, they write dissertations, from Moscow & Petersburg, from Japan & Germany & Austria. They're preparing for the future."

When I see someone identified as a "re-settler" it boggles my mind that someone would choose to relocate their family to the potentially poisoned land surrounding Chernobyl, even years after the accident and evacuation. But then I read their story and am reminded that there are worse things than radiation poisoning. Living in Chernobyl is paradise compared to the war and persecution these people are fleeing from.

I won't be updating with any spoilers, but I did want to share that I was concerned, going in, that I didn't remember anything from the previous books, but by pg 19 my memory has been sufficiently jogged. It's all coming back to me, and Meyer achieves this via her storytelling and not through an info dump... very promising.

Ooooh! The 3rd story arc features art by Michael Gaydos who did Alias!! I'm already in a better mood now that The Pulse is rockin the look-and-feel of the Jessica Jones I fell in love with. OK, I'll cease the fangirling.

So, the 2nd of the 3 story arcs collected in this book was a tie-in for the Secret War crossover event. Not impressed. A pregnant Jessica gets tossed around like a beach ball, with no agency of her own. Things happen to her and she's just wandering around looking for Luke Cage. I hope the next story arc digs back into the richly written char I loved so much in Alias! Or at least returns to this bk's actual premise.

I'm reading this issue-by-issue. This is so odd - it's totally a Jessica Jones story but the cover art for the first 7 issues is all Spider-Man. Goes to show how much comics has changed in the past 10 years. I'm glad this new collected edition features Jones so prominently in both title and cover.
