I downloaded this because I read the back at HPB and thought it sounded crazy but I am honestly surprised how good it is so far

Guy in this book just ordered a bloody mary with gin which I guess is to drive home that he's a Navy guy but I kind of laughed at imagining how bad that would be

I think everyone in 1865 had lead poisoning or something

if I hadn't slept in four days and Murtry cornered me inside some alien ruins to talk about how much he loves his evil job I am shooting to kill and kicking his wormy ass into the chasm. he is approaching Miles Quaritch levels of "guy who just loves to be evil" by the end of this book

People in The Expanse are constantly using "pear-shaped" as an idiom to mean something has gone wrong. I hope eventually they touch on what historic event planted this term in common usage because I have never heard anyone in the real world say it once

Really funny how every interaction Bobbie Draper has with anyone they have to mention that they are so horny and scared that she basically has psychic control over them. Yes ma'am

these books whip so much ass dude

I know the idea is that they hired a bunch of dumb muscle to be expendable security for their evil experiment but I would not be applying for a job at a fake company literally called Meat For The Machine LLC

alright here we go!

So far I think this is good but maybe not generationally great the way the hype led me to believe. Maybe the second half will really ramp up

[reading about some guys unearthing mysterious artifacts] dogg i just know these mfs are about to unleash an ancient evil. probably gonna be beyond human comprehension too. smh

Barely into the meat of this yet and it's already a precious gem of a wacko paperback. I love an author with the nuts to reprint a news item about some truck drivers going missing and extends exactly one theory, which is that (quoting the book here) "Could some love-struck flying saucer females have decided to go fishing above that British highway?"

Making your protagonist a former science teacher as an excuse to fill your book with various fun facts you found while researching is such a tremendous dweeb move that I am genuinely charmed by it

I ostensibly showed up for the weird horror side of this book but the prologue about these people's complicated little lives in this weird little town is so empathetic and arresting that I am really almost sad there isn't more of it before the plot has to happen to them.
