i knew i would be angry reading this, but i still wasn't sufficiently prepared. fuck men.

conflicted feeling. i loved the first 40 pages of this book with our narrator. his outside-in view of raif really setups up the latter portion of the story. but i can't help feeling as if raif's feelings of limerence are a by-product of him manic pixie dreamgirlifying maria. she outwardly rejects that image, but it doesn't seem to register to him. also it's a product of the time but the homophobia is not fun.

not my usual read but i'm very intrigued by the parallels between the narrator and the deuteragonist. slow going because i'm trying (and failing) to annotate.

i don't know who to root for and i love it lol also i'm finally at eli's pov and i'm curious to know his true motivations

i'm kind of underwhelmed? but maybe that's because i'm reading the parents' backstory and it feels very textbook. holding out bc i'm excited for the riva siblings. except hud maybe 💀

the characters and the writing are so lovely but i feel like the story itself isn't really going anywhere

i really like this so far. the characters are all compelling and so far, the author has painted a pretty picture of childhood innocence in contrast with the mounting tension in 80s SL.
