I probably will not read this book into summer but the beginning has been very good. I was very surprised by the first point of view where Rashad was almost killed as "blood [pooled] in [his] mouth" from the officer beating him (Reynolds, Kiely 24).

This is a strong window book for me because I live with a great family, but seeing the situation that Kambili is in really allows me to see the lives of people that have different situations as me. At this point in the book Kambili can barely hug her dad, but instead "[stands] there and [stares] as [him]" because of all the things he has done to her and her mom (Adichie 252).

A prediction for the rest of the book is that Papa gets more consistent with the beatings and something bad ends up happening to him. I thought that he was going to get better when the kids when to Ifeomas house the second time, but the chapter ended with Kambili reminding the audience that "[that was] the day Papa threw his heavy missal across the room and broke the figurines" (Adichie 253).

A groups identity impacts the was people see themselves in good and bad ways. Kambili first thought that her cousins were loud and obnoxious, but after spending time with them she realized that they were not that bad. She also began to treat herself differently and began to have opinions on things that she did not have otherwise. Kambili “[sees] Father Amadi’s clay-colored face” in everything now (Adichie 205).

The book has finally gotten to the best parts. I wonder what will happen next, but I have a feeling that it has to do with Kambili wanting to leave. I predict this because when she got home, she was thinking about “how the living room had too much empty space, [and] too much wasted marble floor” (Adichie 192). I think she likes it better at her aunts.

Adversity impacts the way in which others see us. This is shown when Kambili and Jaja are with their grandfather because the kids are from a rich family where they have schedules and pray very often, while their grandfather prays to a different god and is poor. Kambili even asked Jaja "[if] Papa {would] find out [about Papa-Nnukwu being at the house]" (Adichie 155).

I think that I am starting to get to the plot of the book as I have now heard about a purple hibiscus. I wonder if we will learn about Aunty Ifeomas “good freind in Phillipa” because she is the person who made the plant (Adichie 128). I have no idea how this plant could affect the characters in the book as much as I think it will. I am excited to see.

Throughout this book, I have seen many instances of a window and some situations of a mirror. The biggest window I can see through this book is the parts about religion. I am not catholic so seeing the things that this family does is different from what I am used to seeing. Such as when Kambili "[says] all fifteen decades of the Rosary" while driving to her cousins (Adichie 109).

Now that I am about 1/3 of the way through, I can say that this book is pretty good. Some parts are relatable, like the parts with cousins on Christmas. Other parts are very different from what I am used to. This includes a part where “[Aunt Ifeoma] reached out and pulled [Kambili’s] left breast” (Adichie 72). This was just kind of a loop for me to read because I was not expecting Kambili to call it playful.

What I learned from the article was that "Christians in Nigeria comprise an estimated 49.3% of the population" (School Software Pro par. 1). I also learned that Christianity was brought to Nigeria in 1515 and is spreading rapidly due to new mega-churches. This connects to the main character's family, mostly her dad because they are very religious and take church very seriously.

I chose this book because I thought that I would be interested in the foreign culture and use this book as a window into a different culture. This book is interesting, but I was a little confused throughout this whole section of the book. The part that confused me the most was when papa and Kambili are at the school and talked about "the girl [having] one head, too, [and] she does not have two" (Adiche 47).

I am excited to read the rest of this book because it has been good so far. I do not know what to expect, and the family is very religious so I have had to look up some words. I think the father has some problems because he "picked up [his] missal and flung it across the room, towards [his son]" after his son did not do what he said (Adichie 7). I am ready to keep reading and seeing what happens later in the book.

The author is very descriptive in her writing style and I like it a lot. There are almost entire paragraphs dedicated to describing different things in the book. While the family was eating dinner, the main character "molded [her] fufu into small balls with [her] fingers, dipped it in the soup, making sure to scoop up the fish chunks, and then brought it to [her] mouth" (Adichie 12).
