I really wasn’t enjoying this book at the start but it surprised me bc Harpman goes beyond the surface question of “what would a woman’s life be like without knowing men.” Instead, she strips absolutely everything away, from biological processes, to societal constructs, to spatial and temporal concepts, and asks how life would be like having never known anything at all. Ugh, this book is HAUNTING.

Certain characters were written a bit messy and I fear the romance all felt very insta-lovey, but I do like all the twists and turns of the story. Not sure yet if I want to continue.

gonna switch over to ebook, I’m not sure it translates well to audio book bc characters sort of interject in the story through “notes”

Gonna be honest the anti-capitalist messaging is a little too heavy handed, even if this book is aimed to a young adult/new adult audience. I’m all for exploring these sorts of ideas but the way it’s written feels very clumsy.

I could not put this book down. It took me a bit to reconcile science fiction elements with the fantasy, but the story and setting are so unique and gripping. I’m absolutely destroyed by the ending, but also really intrigued by all the loose ends that need to be tied up.

It's been about 10 years since I first read the Hunger Games, and it didn't make that big of an impression on my the first time. I was so surprised to enjoy the audiobook this much. The book is so intelligently and sharply written, and doesn't pull its punches when it comes to darker themes. Will be reading the entire series and the prequels.

Quite a bit denser than The Dispossessed in my opinion, but just as brilliant. Le Guin's style of prose and writing is so intricate and delightful. The world of Gethen is as immersive as it is alien - you feel like you're there, on the Ice, with Genly and Estraven. I almost cried at the end of Chapter 19. Even in the most bitter cold, there's still warmth. I'll be thinking about this book for a while.

A whimsical nothing burger is still a nothing burger I fear. I honestly think the best parts of this book were the actions scenes bc everything else (dialogue, prose, etc.) is too slow and repetitive for my taste. Also, the simple world building just isn’t for me :(

I feel like there were a lot of fresh takes on classic elements of the fantasy and romance genres, and I appreciate the depth of the characters even though the plot twists still feel either a little bit predictable or too unexpected
