Crying over Colonel Edgar J. Treacy's death in a CCF POW camp. He was left behind and captured at the battle of Chipyong-Ni. His death stemmed from his generous giving of his rations to other men in the camp. His men wanted to put him in for the Medal of Honor and Colonel Marcel Crombez blocked the furtherance of the nomination, citing insubordination on Treacy's part. I'm going to dig further. Thank, you, Col.Treacy

Just finished the Chosin battle section. I'm tempted to go over to Halberstam's book and read up to this same point but I think I'll press on and make comparisons later.

It's getting hot! Premier Zhou Enlai said that Peking will not tolerate foreign intrusion north of the 38th parallel.

I was taken aback about the "Monument tanks" that the 70th Tank Battalion had to take from their display platforms at Fort Knox to Korea. They were M-26 Pershings.

Note: I'd like to read more about the longleaf pine program between the DoD and state agencies and NGOs.

I'm enjoying this re-read immensely. Specifically I appreciate Mr. Blair's sensitive assessment of Black history and of the men's integration into the U.S. Army during the Korean war.

"But a pair of true friends is careful right from the outset not to grow overly thick branches in each other's direction. The trees don't want to take away from each other, and so they develop sturdy branches only at the outer edges of their crowns, that is to say, only in the direction of "non-friends."
