A part that surprised me was how sick one of the puppies got. Hungry, one of the main dogs of the four, got really sick, and passed away. In the story, they never answered how he died, but thought it was some kind of sickness from birth. "The scent of death, recognizable to me as any memory, wafted off of Hungry in the dry, dusty air," (22). This is when they realized he had passed and became very somber about it.

Something that I am interested about is who Percy's father really is. Sally, Percy's mom, and Percy both describe things about him a bit, but never actually said where he went and what happened to him. "'He was kind, Percy,' she said. 'Tall, handsome, and powerful. But gentle too. You have his black hair, you know, and his green eyes,'" (38). This shows that Percy never knew his dad from a young life; only Sally.

I was interested in the story line of Thackeray Porringer, who died at the age of fourteen. As Bod is going through the cemetery, he comes across Thackeray who rudely requests for his book back. "'It's my book,' said Thackeray Porringer, obstinately. 'Give it back'" (175). Although Bod does not want to give it back because he is only borrowing it, he still returns it and even shares a book recommendation to him.

I am interested in Bod's whole story. Bod is a 5 year old boy raised by the dead. In chapter 3, Bod's character especially shines, with his intelligent, creative mind. For example, he used different objects around him to state the alphabet. "A big hairy C is for Cow, I think. With horns," (51). This shows that he thinks out of the box in variety of situations. I'm excited to learn more about his character.

I think it is sweet how Mrs. Owen takes care of the child. "The child had fallen asleep in Mrs. Owens's arms. She rocked it gently, sang to it an old song, one her mother had sung to her when she was a baby herself," (24). Jack, the main character, tries to kill the baby to realize it was a stuffed animal that he had tried stabbing. Ever since, it seems Mrs. Owens has wanted to keep the baby as safe as possible.

A big surprise is when Shay agrees to get caught to be pretty. Shay says to Tally, "I'll go back to the city and get caught. In a few weeks you come and get me. Give me the cure. You've got your subject" (396). True friends share private and important things which proves Tally means so much to Shay. This shows that no matter what, nothing can get in the way of their relationship, no matter the circumstance.

One thing that surprised me is when Tally finally finds Shay again and she has turned pretty. From the beginning, you would have never thought Shay would have become this beautiful girl, with soulful, copper and gold eyes and generous parted lips. She always disagreed with Tally's opinion and even ran away because of it. "It was Shay. She was pretty" (363). This shows that some people, like Shay, actually do change.

I think it was a sweet thing for David to care for Tally so much. When Tally had a scratch on her face from the fire, David made sure she was okay and also said goodbye before he left for a walk. "David nodded, kissed his finger, and traced one of the remaining scratches on her cheek. 'See you tomorrow,' he whispered" (268). That is why I think it was a dearest thing to do and shows how much he looks after her.

One thing that surprised me is when Tally had just got dropped off by the helicopter and spotted Shay and the other Uglies up ahead. Eventually, Tally caught up to get told there was a bug in her board and Tally lied saying she didn't know it was there. "Oh, I'm really . . . I didn't know. I swear" (181). This shows that Tally would try anything just to become pretty and would even lie and betray her best friend.

I was surprised how Tally left Shay to get the surgery through all the things they did together. They were best friends after both sneaking away from the Pretties and after all the adventures they did together, Tally chose to do the surgery and left Shay to stay ugly forever. "Guess you'll just have to live with remembering my face this way" (92). This shows that becoming pretty is stronger than a best friends bond.

Tally, the main character, "lost" her best friend named Peris. He became pretty before her and Peris seemed to feel awkward when talking to her since she was still an ugly. "I tried. But it just felt bogus. I'm so different now" (17). They knew each other very well since their birthdays were only 3 months apart and Tally needs to wait 3 more months till they can be comfortable friends once again.

Mrs. Jones was forgiving and caring. Roger tried stealing her purse since he wanted new shoes and he failed. Mrs. Jones then took him to her house to clean him up and feed him, even though he had just done a crime. "Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face" (3). She understood his troubles and made sure that he wasn't dirty and that's why I felt she was a caring, forgiving, person.

Lucia is finished with The Jacket
A surprising part of the story is when the narrator threw his guacamole colored jacket over the fence. When his old jacket got worn out, he asked his mom for a leather jacket to wear at school. The day he wore it, he felt bullied and "when it became so spotted that my brother began to call me 'camouflage', I flung it over the fence into the alley." (3) This proves that he's so aggravated, he couldn't wear it anymore.
