Elias is on page 115 of 357 of Gone to the Woods: Surviving a Lost Childhood
I was surprised when Sig—the protagonist's uncle—told him to steer an 18-foot long canoe, which was something the boy had never done before. The text says " 'Pick up a paddle and kneel towards the front on the bottom.' The boy thought, All right, here's another new thing...he had no real idea how to do any of it..." I find it sort of irresponsible that this grown man trusts a child to steer a canoe down a river.

I was very surprised when this 5-year-old child was being transfered from train to train by himself. The kid was on his way to live with his aunt, who was miles and miles away. Since his mother had to 'work', she had the conductor move him from these different trains. "His eyes closed as he felt himself being picked up and handed to another man" (15). It's sad to see this kid being carried around like luggage.

I was very surprised when Percy DECLINED the offer of being a god. After being the hero of Olympus, Zeus offered Percy to become a god, which he refused. Zeus offers on page 351, "...Perseus Jackson—If you wish it—you shall be made a god." to which Percy declines on the next page, "No...I've got a lot of life left to live. I'd hate to peak in my sophomore year." It's hard to believe someone could give that chance up.

I found it both surprising and hilarious that a bunch of centaurs show up on the middle of a battlefield. On page 259, just when the Half-Bloods think they're surrounded, Chiron and an "entire cavalry" join the battle. Percy narrates that "A new blast of horns shattered the night. The air shimmered. In a blur of movement, an entire cavalry appeared as if dropping out of light speed." Riordan somehow made war funny.

I was surprised the Percy could TALK to the East and Hudson river. He convinces the rivers themselves to sink Kronos' ships heading towards Manhattan by cleaning them. He succeeds on page 180 when their conversations ends: " "Um, the invaders?" I prompted. The East flicked his hand. "They just got sunk." Hudson snapped his fingers. "Bunch of hellhounds just took a dive." " The river's personalities are crazy.

I was surprised that the tension in the camp left Percy and Annabeth on bad terms. Camp Half-Blood was the definition of chaos as the war with Kronos was on the horizon. After being told about his prophecy of his own soul being reaped, the couple get into an arguement about it. On page 75, Percy begins to say " "How?" I said. "Look at our camp. We can't even stop fighting each other." " What words can do to people.

I was really surprised when I found out Scythe Faraday was alive. Citra had shot a figure in the dark only to find out it was Scythe Faraday to begin with. "Scythe Faraday's face was a mask of pain and disbelief." After all this time, I'm too shocked to even believe that this is how to book would go.

I was surprised when Rowan just completely shattered Citra's neck. During a spar with Rowan and Citra, with 10 seconds to spare, Rowan ends it with an illegal move, snapping the neck. " "You fell into my trap," he said. "Now you get what you deserve." Then he flung her body into the air, twisting her head the other way. Her neck broke with a loud and horrible snap..." I still find it pretty brutal to 'win' like that.

I was surprised when Scythe Goddard and his group of other sycthes began to beat Rowan up. They claimed it was "so you could experience what our ancestors once did." The text states "'...Then he stood back, signaled the others to advance, and they began to be Rowan to a pulp." I can't help but have the feeling that the Scythe Goddard isn't the best mentor.

I found it really surprising that Scythe Faraday had gleaned himself for the sake of Citra or Rowan's life. The event was such a shock to everyone that The High Blade Xenocrates had come to share the news. "The High Blade took a deep breath in, and sighed. 'He invoked the seventh commandment,' Xenocrates said. 'Scythe Faraday has gleaned himself.' I still find it astounding that Scythe Faraday would do such a thing.

I was surprised when Scythe Faraday kept his calm and let Citra wear his ring. She was curious and picked it up, not knowing he watched. The text reads "Then, when she glanced at the scythe, she could see that his eyes were open, and watching here. She froze, knowing she was caught...[text skip for more character use.]...'Would you like to try it on?' Scythe Faraday asked..." I still find it odd that he was merciful.

One attribute that describes Mrs. Jones would be that she was very merciful. After Roger—who tried to steal her purse—had been caught by her hands, she didn't do anything back, but treated him like her own son. "Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face," "Well, you didn't have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes...You could of asked me." With how she had acted, she was shown to be merciful.

Elias is finished with The Jacket
A surprising part of the novel was when the Narrator went back to get the jacket his mother had got him that he hated. The insults from his brother made him go to such an extent to toss it into an alleyway. "Later, however, I swiped the jacket off the ground and went inside..." presumably out of guilt. His actions show that he cares about his mother so much to the point of keeping what he thinks is trash for her.
