So many weird kid pop culture references made by the MC out of nowhere even though it’s established he’s a older dude who knows nothing about pop culture??? He’s never heard of Harry Potter but he quotes Taylor Swift and references Gangnam Style? This is so confusing 🤣

It took me a while to get into as the audiobook narrator somewhat flattens CS Poe's excellent writing, but once I got into the swing of things I fell in love with this steampunk historical Western romance between a shy law-abiding nerd and a criminal with a heart of gold!

So weird and wonderful.

Also this is a good example of a book that doesn’t everything I DONT like (insta love, TSTL moments, cheating, OTT-ness out of nowhere, obvious killer) yet I enjoy the book because the characters and romance worked. I cared and believed in the fantasy CS Poe was spinning. I DNF’d Adrian English immediately which is kind of funny cause I hear it’s similar. Might give it another go.

There are some strange assumptions about the MC which the other MC makes that are almost,,, misogynistic? It’s a very weird vibe.

(1) repetitive dialogue as they repeat the same facts about the mystery - pacing! (2) there’s something very weird and inconsistent about the MCs which I don’t love

Terrible French accents in audiobook. Talky story. Uninteresting inconsistent characters and mystery. OTT dialogue. Oof and the romance is creepy, Doyle’s behaviour is creepy AF it’s not cute! I’m running out of reasons to like this oh dear…
