And somehow, in the middle of a post cataclysmic event, we are idling in the thoughts of yet another deeply unlikable character.
This is disappointing following the rush of the last few stories and more so for being the title story of this book.

And I don’t love the dude on this train. 🙄

YAS!!!! 🙌 I love this story!

After a rough start, I think I’m in my favorite story right now. I hope there’s no nihilistic twist in this one.

This is a strange read so far. Each story seems like changing the channels on TV. The timelines seem to bookend each other. The author shows a lot of contempt for and between the characters in each one.

The second story is reading like a lost episode of Atlanta. So far so good.

The first story should have either been its own novella, or a lot shorter. The climatic scene is fantastic, but it doesn’t hold enough on its own.
I spent most of the story wondering if there was really a supernatural tree or if it was just regular human hatred and ignorance turned in on itself in the least fun way imaginable.

One of the kids has an interesting theory about the tree. Let’s see where the first story ends up.

This is an incredibly difficult read. I’m still pushing through the first story, but this may go to my rarely used DNF list.

The stages of grief, chasing answers after such gruesome terror are heartbreaking and in a distance sense, relatable.
The calculated cruelty of what happened in 1980 seems at hand with the world in 2026.

Bleak. Truthful and absolutely the bleakest words I have read in recent fiction. On par with the world outside right now
