Alex spending a full page on the volume of visible mauve in the hotel made me laugh. I kept thinking about sad beige.

I do like the inclusion of MWS’s letters and excerpts of her mother’s essays in this edition.

Was it all in Viktor’s head?

Well, there we have it for Viktor and his creature. Henry and the boat captain have been the most tolerable characters. I’m sticking around for the analysis to make this make sense as well as the excerpts from Mary’s mother’s work.

Viktor, for being so utterly verbose about his self inflicted misery, doesn’t describe how he came to create our antagonist at all. Life is good, (giant narrative gap), life is misery. Life could be good again but he goes back on a deal with the antagonist and we get a brief mention of a mess in Viktor’s makeshift lab. Did the author find it inappropriate to speculate on the fictional process or what?

This is my second reading of this book and I’m still trying to figure out if a chapter is missing. What truly happened before Victor’s breakdown? He has spent most of this book blaming a specter we have yet to see for every misfortune in his life.
