this book has very seriously fucked up my sleep rhythm because i normally read in bed before i go to sleep, but this book is sickeningly real in its depiction of war that i don’t want to read it right before sleeping and now i stare at my phone again 😩

i don’t think i’ve ever read a war sequence (in a fantasy book) that feels as devastatingly real as this one

What does it matter? They’re coming, and we’re staying, and at the end of the day whoever is alive is the side that wins. War doesn’t determine who’s right. War determines who remains.

RF Kuang is sooo good at writing enjoyable fantasy books that are not simple escapism, but deep analyses of the complexities of (class/race/gender) war

this book is so long, how tf am i almost 500 pages in and the action hasn’t even started yet

god how do you go from me being a hair’s breath away from the giving the previous book five stars, to every single character being so goddamned insufferable in this one. i’ve already read a quarter of this (not so short!!) book and i’ve just been annoyed the whole way through. can we stop it with all the self-loathing please?????

it’s already gotten to that point where there’s so many high stakes events happening that it’s impossible to put down. that usually doesn’t come this early in a book, i feel like a prisoner 😭

i’d chosen this series thinking i was safely starting one that had been neatly finished and wrapped up by now since the first book is from 2014 and there’s 6 of them, only to find out the last book is not out yet and the people have been waiting for it for three years already????? and that it will definitely not be out in 2026?????? existence is prison
