Monica is starting Ruined
War is evil & its acts are violently acted upon the body & there is a specificity to the act of war waged on women's bodies that is exceptionally evil--so horrific, the word evil appears to lose its meaning, but Nottage will not let that erasure happen, nor will she let the audience look away.

Monica is starting Mac on a Hot Tin Roof
A matchmaking cat who knows better than humans? Perishing in a pandemic? Totally losing will to believe this is real and not a shared simulation? Then Mac & his inner thoughts are for you. In, as we say in the Catholic Church, “Ordinary Time” this book would be two stars...but my literary needs are constantly chamging these days & this book made me as happy as a cat with sardines

Monica is starting King Lear
Outta the trifecta of tragedy that I know best: Hamlet is still my favorite and probably te best; Macbeth is accessible and imprinted in our cultural consciousness (unsex me now; fair is foul and foul is fair; something wicked this way comes; sound and fury); but Lear is the one that takes you to the saddest and lonliest places the human soul knows. Brilliant and tough reread: five stars:

Monica is 33% done with 3 by Flannery O'Connor: The Violent Bear It Away / Everything That Rises Must Converge / Wise Blood
Wise Blood: What a great book to finish on a rainy, windy Halloween night. Hazel Motes and the cast of characters he meets after his creepy train ride into a Twin Peaks-esque Southern small town are an odd and disturbing lot. The gifted, descriptive, eerie O'Connor drops the Southern Gothic gauntlet in this tale. The novel feels like a possible prologue for Faulkner's short story, "A Rose for Emily."
