Liking the book a lot more vs. the previous 20%

Interesting… so far

This book has gotten better. Being my first book in this type of genre/setting/characters, I found it has been hard to connect with the story. However, Tartt writes in a really pretty way, and I have been enjoying the book more than when I did at 50 or so pages.

My first dark academia book— so far, I feel a little lost, hesitant, and even bored on topics that go over my head (e.g. philosophy, Greek mythology, and at times, French). I am hoping I get through it, or that these concepts are not much part of the story later on (lol)

Over halfway done and I’m already sad about it ending. I’ve loved the company of this book and its characters— namely, Samuel and Lee, and at times, even the overly-painfully-reflectively-human Adam, who often makes me anxious. I find myself worried for the twins, for Adam, and the Hamiltons. I find myself forcing to read slower, so that the end may be delayed.

This book has pleasantly surprised me so far. Steinbeck has such a unique way of setting the scene and describing things, and revealing the story so intentionally by giving us just enough context in between the lines.

I liked the story in story narrative. But the “twist” was almost an “easy-out” and made the ending predictable. The translated tone was okay although a little strange at times.
