I have hated Annie Dillard and Pilgrim at Tinker Creek for years. This book made me hate them more: “‘I explore the neighborhood,’ Dillard tells us near the start, yet nowhere…does she tell us it was a suburb. Tinker Creek was in view of houses, people, driveways, cars.” WHAT? Dillard, you pretentious ass.

Not terrible so far—B-grade mystery/thriller tryna give Indiana Jones vibes. But I’ll tell ya, Rutger, the off-hand, half-ass joking comment about college libraries is not endearing.

“Eir body is all hot glue gun holsters and secret sewing kit compartments. Why? Because they FASTEN FURIOUS.”

Okay, I did not start this monster fucking book to be read to filth—

“Others may be disappointed in the path you forge for yourself, but you must remember that their disappontment belongs to them and them alone. It is not yours to manage.”

I am a broken human right now😭 But that library scene was very very nice

Anthologies are usually hit or miss, but this one was banger after banger. Even the not-quite/5-star ones were good.

Faves:
-Homesick by Sam Hirst—bookish and Sapphic, what more do you need?
-The Ruin by E. Saxey—Trans rep and dooom!
-Leadbitter House by Mason Hawthorne—Trans rep, lovely weird ending

So, I was literally just telling someone that this one wasn’t as good as Sager’s others and that I wasn’t as engrossed. All that is still sort of true, but lord did I ever just hit the twist!

slow going on this one because I have a ton of homework happening, but I'm finding out I'm enjoying it a lot more this time. :-)

I love the world in these books--same universe as Fallen Gods, so of course I do--but...I already know who the couple is gonna be in this, and I fully hate half of the couple right now. We'll see how this goes.

If this ends on a cliffhanger, I'mma lose it.
