This is a well researched book but it fundamentally comes from a counter-terrorism position of international relations and is not structured to best tell the story of ETA. Unfortunately, it remains one of the few decent books on the subject at all.

This is a bad book that is good for research since it contains UDS members’ internal narratives. But allows for blatantly untrue claims, like the idea that Catholics shot first during the 1969 pogrom, that the fighting was instigated by the IRA (which was nearly defunct by that point), and that Catholics set fire to their own homes. Really shameful this was taken to press.

This books is stunning and I can’t believe it’s still in print from Pluto. It’s a history of the UDA written in a painfully meandering way with huge claims that leap beyond the academic consensus and justifies UDA sectarian murders. It literally has sections where, in allowing a UDA volunteer to recount their story verbatim, they refer to Catholic families as [Catholics/IRA]. Consensus lies are printed as fact.
