Robert the Devil' is a compelling narrative, even after 800 and more years, and even after translation. The sentimentalist in me was warmed by beginning and end: rogue to saint, heathen to Christian. I was bored atthe 'middle', however, ironically where the most action is. I was distracted because, in my opinion, of the uninteresting, plain, modern English and choice of free verse. Possibly, I am deaf to rhythme.

I've had this book on wishlist since it was published in 2021. Only a year later in 2022, did Pope Benedict pass on from this mortal life. I remember that night vividly because my brother and I were working, we teared up at the news and said a brief prayer before returning to work. I am glad to have finally read this collection (some parts already familiar to me); I hope to continue my journey with Benedict.
