Nothing is goodness in our eyes, that crosses our own inclination. We can hardly bear to hear of the cross, much less to take it up. We talk of goodness, but yield to discontent. We do not profess to dislike trial-only the trial now pressing upon us-any other cross than this; that is, my will and wisdom rather than God's. Is there not great need of this prayer

Vs 66: Teach me good judgment and knowledge; that, in  the simplicity of faith, I may be blessed with a tender conscience, and be delivered from the bondage of a scrupulous, and from the perplexity of an unenlightened, conscience. Let my heart never condemn me where it ought not. Let it never fail to condemn me where it ought. 

The only hope of the world is if the light shines and the salt does not lose its saltiness. What a useful book for our time.

He speaks of the importance of reforming the church at the time of the Reformation. No truer now. The church needs a second reformation.

Polycarp before his martyrdom at 86 years old:

For we are not accustomed to repent of what is good to adopt that which is bad.

Thus the Lord can never be enjoyed, even by His own children-except as a portion- not only above all, but in the place of all. Other objects indeed may be subordinately loved: but of none but Himself must we say-"He is altogether lovely." "In all things He must have the preeminence"- …The moment that any rival is allowed to usurp the throne of the heart, we open the door to disappointment and unsatisfied desires.

True it is, that the corrupt and rebellious inclinations will "lust" to the end. But as long as indulgence is denied, conflict excited, and the constant endeavor maintained to "bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ," our liberty is established, even where it is not always enjoyed.

Heavenly, gracious Father! who and what are we, that our hearts should be made the unworthy recipients of Your grace? that our will should be subdued into "the obedience of faith?" and that we should be permitted to anticipate that blessed period, when we shall "keep Your law continually, forever and ever?" May this prospect realize the happiness of our present obedience!

Regarding David, “…and when he resolved to kill Nabal and all his family, which was a wicked and carnal passion, in which there was nothing but flesh; yet when he was stopped by the advice and discreet counsel of Abigail, we see how presently he yielded. 1 Samuel 25:32ff. There is a kind of perpetual tenderness of conscience in God’s people.”

Lord! seal-establish Your word to Your servant-devoted as I am-as I would be-to Your fear. If "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom"-a "treasure"-a "strong confidence"-"a fountain of life"-how wise-how rich-how safe-how happy-is he who "is devoted to" it! "Blessed" indeed is he-with the favor of his God, the secret of His love, the teaching of His grace, and the mercy of His covenant.

Re: Psalm 119:38

“Because we must not bear false witness, as not against others, much less against ourselves. Many help Satan, the accuser, and plead his cause against the Spirit, their comforter, in refusing to see what God sees in them. We must make conscience of this, to know the good as well as the evil,…”

Marooooooned! Hysterical. My nose between my two eyes that I have to look at every day!

I am going to love this book.

The first time I heard this book, it was read to me by my daughter on her spring break when she was about 10. “Mom, would you like me to read this to you?” Yes, please😍. I laughed & cried. A very enjoyable memory because the story was great & her voicing tickled me pink, and I loved that she wanted to share it with me. Today I start reading it to a little friend of mine. Documenting here for my own records.

“O Lord, put me  not to shame." Leave me not to myself, lest I become a shame to myself, and an offence to Your Church. "I will keep Your statutes. O forsake me not utterly." Dependence upon the Lord, in a deep sense of our weakness, is the principle of perseverance…He has promised-"My people shall never be ashamed;" and therefore, taking firm hold of His promise, you may "go on your way rejoicing." 

Interesting discussion about the monk putting forth the mercy of God and the pagan requires justice.

Re: confessing sin:

“…we give God the honor of his wisdom in knowing our own condition.”

“We shame Satan, who first takes away shame of sinning, & then takes away shame of sin. He tempts us not to be ashamed to do that we are ashamed to confess, so we, by silence, keep Satan’s counsel against our own souls. If we accuse ourselves, we put him out of his office who is the accuser of the brethren’.”

I’m very grateful this book has been written. If you struggle with hospitality on any level I commend it to you.

“Consider also, if a man had been so kind and bountiful to me, if I should reward his kindness with unkindness, I should have been ashamed, and have covered my face with shame; and yet how unkind have I been unto God, that hath been so kind to me, and yet I never a whit ashamed!”
