Droewyn is starting A Perfect Blood (The Hollows, #10)
I think my ace spectrum is showing, but I'd really like to see ONE male character that Rachel isn't either ready to hop into bed with, desperately repressing the fact that she's ready to hop into bed with, or can't hop into bed with because of size limitations but will constantly think about how hot he is anyway. It's exhausting.

I'm enjoying the book in general, but what is *with* Pierce's language? It's like Harrison took a bunch of vaguely old-timey-sounding words and phrases, pureed them in a blender, and smeared them onto the text with a broken plastic spork. I read plenty of fiction both set in and written in the nineteenth century, and nobody talks like this guy, ever. It's rather distracting.

Droewyn is starting Brazen (Otherworld Stories, #13.3)
I was super excited when I found out this takes place in Detroit, but the descriptions are entirely generic. Detroit has slums. Its (unnamed) suburbs have a lot of foreclosed homes. There are highways nearby. Michigan winters are cold. Detroit has an auto show. Which, by the way, is called the International Auto Show, not the Detroit Auto Show. I am disappoint.

Droewyn is 50% done with The Merchant's Daughter (Hagenheim, #2)
I didn't realize this was Christian fiction when I bought it. Got about halfway in and couldn't get past the hamfisted sermonizing.

Droewyn is reading The Spy Who Haunted Me (Secret Histories, #3)
As much as I love Green's stuff, he only writes two characters. This is really, really noticeable when you tear through his books all at once like I've been doing.

The current Goodreads poll is "Would you read a book only based on the cover and the description?" This is the part where I admit that I bought this book entirely because of the cover art. I'd say the blurb too, but quite frankly they had me at the art. A unicorn AND a sword-wielding Princess in a pink dress? SOLD. And it was one of the best purchasing decisions I ever made.

Droewyn is reading Blue Moon Rising (Forest Kingdom, #1)
I just learned that a new Forest Kingdom book is coming out this week. This is a great excuse to reread the entire series in a fantastic Simon Green binge. Blue Moon Rising is one of my favorite fantasy novels ever.

Okay, this book starts out with negative two stars just because every time I see the title I wound up with that godawful Soundgarden song stuck in my head. And that's terrible.

Happy negro slaves who sass back to their masters, secure in the knowledge that nobody will actually beat them aside, and that's a big aside, I'm finding this actually really readable. I like how the narrator goes out of its way to tell you exactly what a spoiled brat Scarlett is.

Droewyn is 25% done with Dark Legacy (Legacy, #1)
The way the love interest was introduced, he came off to me as a seriously creepy stalker/workplace harasser type. Now, having spent some time with him, I still can't bring myself to like the guy. He removes Maddie's agency every chance he gets, because her "I don't want you here, go away" is less important than his "I need to protect you". Also, "there is some force tying us together" is the worst kind of romance.

Seriously, who the hell attends a meeting to request a promotion -- and I mean anyone, not necessarily a French police lieutenant who desperately wants to get out of a desk job so she can actually fight crime -- and doesn't wear a bra? On purpose? Because she thinks it makes her look "tough"?

Is it a good sign when you want to punch the main character in the throat?

Okay. 34 pages in, and I know who the killer is.

It's Capucine's breasts.

I mean, they're constantly sliding freely under designer silk and such. Why else would the author need to obsessively track every sway and twitch of Our Heroine's sweater puppies unless it means something?

Because when *I'm* self narrating my life, like everyone does, I sure don't as hell give any thought to what my tits are up to.

I've never actually sat down and watched the Bogart Maltese Falcon, but I've been in the room enough times when my husband is watching it that I'm seeing certain specific scenes in my head while reading this.

Caught up on everything released so far. This is similar to Mercedes Lackey's 500 Kingdoms novels, but with a vastly different approach. Loving the characters so far.

This is my classic for July. Partly because I wanted an underhanded pitch after Catch-22 and partially to shut up certain boys who think my diet is deficient in Vitamin Noir.

Okay, he had me at "Spade looked pleasantly like a blond satan."

This book takes place in the logical future of the Harry Potter world. Everyone knows about magic and ordinary humans and magical races are basically chattel beneath the witches and warlocks, who live in towers as gods.
