this was so aggravating and agonizing to read that i had to listen to the audiobook instead. i cannot STAND how these clout-chasing pseudojournalistic nimrods read quotes from the public figures involved in these mocking voice impressions, instead of just saying "quote/endquote" like adults. it's pathetic, childish and yet another testament to the ass-covering and naked cowardice that got us here in the first place

i cannot begin to articulate how infuriating i find the analysis of the kamala harris campaign and candidacy. ofc she should have distanced herself more from biden, but not only do they paint her as an over-cautious, image-obsessed, indecisive shoo-in, but they LIE to do it. she didn't agree with his policy, she wasn't indecisive, the "politburo" used biden to THREATEN TO DERAIL THE CAMPAIGN IF SHE BROKE RANKS W HIM

this has certainly contextualized the torpid patheticism we've seen from the sniveling collaborators in congress. i guess it's good to know they're enablers as well as perpetrators of elder abuse.
shame.

my complaints thus far consist only of those statements which are provably false or incomplete, and which may be harmful, to address in my review
1) gender essentialism in regard to both likelihood of victimization, violent tendencies, and predatory behavior
2) heritability of violent or abusive tendencies irrespective of gender
3) underemphasis of additional barriers and discounting reports by young boys

very insightful on many issues, especially in regards to fact checking myths on kidnappings by providing accurate information and advice that isn't just helicopter parenting, advice on daycare and babysitter choice, practical and nonpartisan advice for the prevention of gun violence that critically includes both prevention of victimization as well as perpetration., HOWEVER there are several massive caveats

it's insane that biden would implicitly threaten the support for harris by philly based powerbrokers if she put daylight between the two of them, and right before the debate too! can't imagine how stressful that must have been

"by this analysis, it's clearly quite unlikely that donald trump will win a second term"
well... i'm glad we're at least in agreement about what his analysis is worth

"i will not be reviewing 21st century presidents because they're too recent to give unbiased analysis" *proceeds to spend more time talking about trump's first term than he did talking about the entire cold war*... yeah okay buddy
and now now he tops it off by claiming Eisenhower only has a legacy as a war hero... does this guy have memory loss? he wrote entire chapter to Eisenhower's presidential accomplishments...

he said he was skipping both bushes and obama to "avoid bias", but everything from carter onward was EXTREMELY skewed

glad the author pointed out how much of reagan's greatest achievement, detente with the soviets, was actually MRS reagan's idea.

the author did fairly well giving each historical president a faithful portrayal, until he got to jimmy carter and the camp david accords, at which point his personal political inclinations increasingly begin to color his analysis of fact

could've gone my whole i've without knowing the size of Lyndon's johnson, but thanks to Mr. Dallek here, i must now live out my days bearing the cursed burden of this knowledge.
i am noting this to remember that i intend to remove a star from my rating as penalty for informing me of this.

also JFK being lionized in presidential history is, in my view, largely a result of his PR more than his actions. he wrote more of his own story than the average president, same with reagan, but where reagan's achievements are just disproportionately weighted, JFK's are often misattributed instead.

hot take but JFK is one of the most overrated cold war presidents, second to only ronald reagan who's foreign policy was at least good (but overshadowed in many ways by his atrocious domestic policy). JFK's achievements are often misappropriated, he's given credit for many of Eisenhower's successes and LBJ is blamed for many of his failures.
