Dang I just really love this book

These philosophers, despite their wisdom and relevance, remind me so much of how Mary in one of my other books that I’m currently reading says that if she were a man and born in a different place, she herself would come to be a great philosopher among them, and she’s totally right.

There’s no flower I’m quite as obsessed with as pansies and violas and I’ve been going crazy waiting for this book!! Brenna Estrada is an exceptional writer and gardener and I’m in heaven right now

It would be cool to hang out with Montaigne but if I had to be around him or married to him back in the day he may have suffered a tragic and early end

Hui details the lives and studiolos of all these many relevant humanists and philosophers, of which he names a few women included here and there, some of whom also had a studiolo or room to themselves, and I’d love to read his similarly detailed arguments on them! He can definitely make many pages from a quote or two, so I don’t feel that my wish is unrealistic

This page mentions a familiar issue: a woman having to give up her privacy and quiet study/reading time as she has become a mom.

I hope to see Hui talk about these women philosophers and writers through a historically transcendental view as he has done with Machiavelli and others, since he has made it very clear how this is a key component of humanism and the nature of a studiolo.

This is so oversimplified, but so many of these guys are just obsessed with themselves and their book-themed man caves! Hui mentions that, and I hope he gets into it more because I know he has thoughts!!

I’m so excited to finally get into this book, and from the first few pages I already feel like I’m talking to an old uncle or cousin. A mix of indigenous ways and Christianity is common, or has been in my life, in Mexican families, and I can’t wait to see where this book goes.

I’ve also been annoyed when Jane makes the wrong moves in this story, but I swear to the lord that if one more person in this book calls her stupid or silly they’re gonna catch these hands

I get the feeling that Hui has probably strongly disliked a few fellow bibliophiles and bibliomaniacs in his time, and has probably tried to sneakily sass them off about their obsession with books. I’d lose my mind to see Philomena Cunk interview this guy
