this book is painfully juvenile, the dialogue feels bereft of warmth and robotic and overall the plot poorly structured. and why do they keep swearing in a way modern people would? they are supposed to be in medieval-imperial china so “damn” “fucking” and “shit” would not be so colloquially used.

el diablo is one of the BEST villains i’ve ever read in a book. every word of his gives me chills!

so the author’s butchered Sky by making him possessive, controlling and violent and she’s even made Meilin now regret wanting to become a hero? Terrible writing

why do I feel like Meilin’s fate will be the same as Rin’s from The Poppy war…

uh oh, a sequel turning out to be mediocre and a shadow of its predecessor? who would’ve guessed. in all seriousness, the tonal shift is bizarre. book one was filled with action and the tension of war and now so far book two has been nothing but court politics/drama

the 1920’s setting really put me off but so far i’m actually having a good time reading this

when I started reading this book, I was confused what time period this was set in. The magic system and talk of fairytales screamed medieval times or some fictional fantasy city similar to Reino del sol in The Sunbearer trials. A quick google search reveals it’s actually set in 1920’s New York. No. I refuse. Urban fantasy in a present or futuristic timeline? Yes! But UF in the recent years? No.
