my enjoyment of this book comes from my envisioning of it as if the wife of bath was a black widow. also how is she digging up dirt? I think this book would have benefited more from show not tell. yes she blackmailed her exes. but how did she do it? the uncovering of marco’s passport was really effective to me i wish there were more scenes like that

It’s really amazing how yanagihara is able to craft the voice of her narrator. It feels so seamless.

The academic project of this novel is really fascinating too. i like what it arouses in regard to hard vs soft sciences, the dilemmas and colonialist mindsets surrounding 20th century anthropology (thinking about it— it’s a tradition from the birth of the science) really cool stuff

this was really challenging read and being in irinas head was nauseating. but i love how she describes pasolini when she’s on coke, and its so endearing to me that when irina is on ketamine she starts talking about lotr and aragorn. obsessed with that. but god idk if i can stomach a reread. (and this is coming from someone whos reread tampa about 50 times lol)
