it's been so long since i've picked up a book and was immediately sucked in! loving this one so far. plus the cover is very pretty😍 (also one niche thing this author is doing that i love: using precise verb choice to convey underlying meaning. like when the king first sees the mc, he's 'loping' over. get it?! it's not too on the nose, but still blatant enoguh to get. i literally screamed alone in my car)

Less by Andrew Sean Greer, and if i'm not mistaken, that's sort of the point? i don't know i haven't actually read it. but we'll see here if the general malasie bears out to any sort of thematic significance, or if it's just uninteresting writing

olive branches towards the only trans contestant as if to prove to himself he's "cool with it" or to others that he doesn't really agree with his husband. everything except actually standing up for trans people. i just finished reading their first interaction and was surprised that she's characterized as so meek and shy, but interested to see where that goes. but on the passive comment, i saw one of comp titles is..

him back, so he says yes with very little resistance. if your whole reason for agreeing is the money, why did you not negotiate even once! his husband becomes the posterchild for transphobia, and luke just sorta... goes along with it? diverging- on that topic, i do think that's an interesting conflict to set up and even moreso seeing through the lens of luke's warped pov where this is somehow okay. and his awkward...

you feel angry/sad but only insofar as to that anyone in this situation would have these emotions. i'm not actually feeling them. and so far, things are just happening to him and he's passively reacting instead of controlling his own narrative. he's shuffled onto s1 of endeavor, and other people fold him into their alliance. his husband cheats on him, so he fights for the kids in the custody battle. endeavor asks...

reveal a bit thrilling. i don't know logistically how this would have worked, but i think it would have been even more rewarding to drag it out longer. it's the most emotion this has brought out of me, and it was a blip. the main thing preventing me from loving this is that our main character Luke is very passive both in the narrative and in his own emotions. you find out your husband is cheating on you, and i know..

i'm liking this so far, not loving. the concept is very interesting, i had forgotten the synopsis entirely. "endeavor" is a not-so-subtle rip off of The Challenge, which I'm glad I watched the last season of because it's getting me excited. i liked the little maneuver in the beginning where you (or at least i) don't realize the narrative hasn't actually named the husband for a couple of scenes, which makes the...

im trying not to let my preconceptions color my experience, but i think my fear is coming true. what's the point of this? it feels like hall took away all of the character development of the first book. we're also focusing very much on bridget's wedding which i fear is a front for the fact that there isn't much more content for luc and oliver. i'm still finding this funny like the first book, so it's not all bad!

yearning that makes each extreme sweeter. i love how each side character is unique and fleshed out, but also how actually integral they are to luke's character growth, not quirky afterthoughts. i also love how hall has crafted this book so that we're seeing oliver only through luke's perspective, but even then it's so clear what oliver is actually thinking (as opposed to luke's insecure preconceptions) to see the...

i'm loving this reread! (i think) this is one of those books i reread a lot when i first read it, but it's been a couple of years. i love going back to these sorts of books where i know i love them, and everything is slightly familiar but i'm delightfully surprised by all of the specifics. i remembered the basic premise and the dick pic running gag. this is uproariously funny but cut with an undercurrent of...

not that i'm breaking any new ground here, but so far, i think this would be an excellent primer for people just starting to look beyond standard education in america. where some nonfiction can be informative if dry, smith's prose leap off the page. his poetry background shines through.

i suddenly saw everybody on my fyp recommending this so i thought i'd give it a shot! tbh don't love the narrator but am loving the story so far but it has that dry wit that i've come to love from historicals, especially coming from georgiana's friends. excited to see where this one goes!

some books want the aesthetics of scifi/dystopian without the actual societal commentary. this is not that. so far definitely liking one pov more than the other, but tbf lia is getting a bit of a slow start with the bulk of the world building responsibilities. extremely long- like hour long- chapters but they're not a slog. we just got a "sullivan" mention in eirale's pov so interested to see how these two intersect!

sabine's chapters are sooo interview with a vampire coded. (the show, never read the book). the constantly changing/ messed up dynamics of three, traipsing across different cities, the hedonism of the chase.

not much unique about her. i mean i've read like two chapters of her, so. ngl at 1.75 speed the narrator's accent is a little hard to follow, but idk if i want to listen to the different perspectives at different speeds that seems a little rediculous lol. the gray widow and lottie are intereting. same person? maybe sabine, idk i just saw she has chapter headings later. as soon as the gray lady was described i..,

not really sure what to think yet... not that far in so i guess i just don't see how everything gels. maria is an interesting character because in some ways she is very naive about life with the viscount, but how could she know, y'know? in other respects, she's very strong- not easily cowed, knows exactly what she wants and what she's willing to do to get it. she's interesting. i like alice so far even if there's...

declarations of relationships coming out of nowhere... what do you mean viri is like your own child? what do you mean hammer and rafaeis have the start of "young love" they seem like okay friends. Khell is so weak i want to HIT HER even if it's intentional. writing is abrupt. love the concept of the world. reminds me of the unbroken by cl clarke.
