finally reading this almost a year after sam recommended it excited to see why the library wait time was so insane

How am i over 69% of the way through with this book and the plot just started

2/2 … maybe i’m a little sensitive about it because of personal experiences (and i should critically confront them more) but i am not sure i agree with the sentiment that someone who mistreats their child due to addiction cannot love them … i think this more complex than hooks gives credit and her perspective seems to be shaped by someone who has not experienced a love one struggle with addiction idk

feeling :/ about this right now… the second chapter is all about the love we are exposed to in childhood, and bell hooks speaks pretty authoritatively on how love cannot exist in contexts of abuse and neglect. i like the sentiment, as it empowers people to stand up for themselves in abusive relationships, but i think it massively overlooks how most instances of paternal neglect occur in the context of addiction.

Only comment so far is I hate the way the parents talk to their kids 💀

the most interesting part of the book so far is trying to discern whether sally rooney actually hates women or if she’s trying to teach me to hate men

50 pages in and I've already audibly screamed twice and almost started sobbing once... learning that open marriage is literally my worst fear!!

Not sure if it is the books I've been choosing or an artifact of American purity culture, but the sexual deviancy of the male characters (first in the Murakami I read last year and now in Seventeen) are leaving me ?? wtf is going on in Japan??

I did like Seventeen; I wish the themes could have been expanded upon a little more, but I think that it gave a great background to a very interesting premise overall
