Has the writer ever been to the Pacific Northwest, let alone America? Americans don’t think an hour is a long drive. The phrases these “characters” (a very generous term for the lame excuses of stereotypes in this book) use are not American in the slightest. I struggle to believe any of this. For me to buy into octopus-human commiseration, you need to actually write them well.

I LOVE the “match-cuts” between some chapters. And the things Nick and Amy say but are unsure each other are saying (questioning the use of the word “surreal”). Again, what a beautiful, fantastic, funny, thoughtful analysis of marriage. Hell yeah.

Really insightful but I wish there was better sourcing/referencing and that a copy editor had looked over the kindle edition.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m struggling to see the incisive wit and satire I remember this book having. The characters are not funny enough to be caricatures, they are just sort of boring. Especially Lizzy. The reader is told that she is uniquely intelligent and perceptive, but more perceptive comments are made by most other characters. Maybe it’s just me and my tiny vocabulary against the genius of the classics

Chapter 4 was really annoying. Bro. You do not need to walk me through every potential neosensory technology.

I like it but the writing style is so aggravating. Sometimes sci-fi authors try to avoid telling instead of showing but then just do double the writing leaving no room for reader re-interpretation. There's a reason Eldritch horrors are still such a popular concept. Let me fathom things for myself! I don't need you to hold my hand through every world-building element!

Holy SHIT this is good thank you bangs! The characterisation is fabulous and the writing is good on a sentence level without being pretentious or flowery.

I was having a cracking time going “haha literally me” and wondering why this book was described as disturbing. Anyway. Writing is utilitarian but manages not to be boring thanks to a good use of rhythm. The alternative POV is INSANE and made me have to put my kindle down multiple times. So fucked up.
