There are moments in your life that you will always remember.

Sometimes pain was like a storm that came out of nowhere. The clearest summer morning could end in a downpour. Could end in lightning and thunder.

But love was always something heavy for me. Something I had to carry

the problem with trying hard not to think about something was that you thought about it even more

I wondered what that was like, to hold someone's hand. I bet you could sometimes find of all the mysteries of the universe in someone's hand.

The problem with my life was, that is someone else’s idea

Maman used to say that you can always find something to be happy about

When I was first imprisoned, the hardest thing was that my thoughts were still those of a free men

It’s just that I don’t have much to say so I keep quiet

I said that people never change their lives, that in any case one life was a good as another and that I wasn’t dissatisfied with mine here at all

They look as if they belong to the same species, and yet they hate each other

It occurred to me that anyway one more Sunday was over, that maman was buried now, that I was going back to work, and that really, nothing had changed

Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know.

Ми долучимось - ми виберемо українську мову і українську культуру, хай не як мову й культуру своїх батьків і дідів, бо родинні історії - болісні й суперечливі, - а як мову своїх дітей. Тож нашим дітям не доведеться відкинути звичне….
