Book 2 Chapter VIII: “Valerie” took me for all I had

The prose is pmo. The first chapter was good but I also felt like it was SAYING something. Now I feel like he takes 10 pages to say absolutely nothing:
“It was May, but cold and wet again. A cold wet May, good for corn and hay! Much the corn and hay matter nowadays!”
In this case the cadency/rhyme does have its interest but the almost stream of consciousness narrator (which isn’t actually) is PMO
