Contrasting the best of its culture with its murderous tradition of anti Semitic vitriol, Steiner wonders what direction Europe will take now.

I just finished Arcadia: A novel and gave it 5 stars. This is my second reading of this charming fantasy and I enjoyed it as much as the first.

I just finished Louisa: The Extraordinary Life of Mrs. Adams and gave it 5 stars. Louisa Adams was a monumental woman. This biography is a must read for anyone interested in early 18th century history.

I just finished The Beast in the Jungle (Xist Classics) and gave it 5 stars.

I just finished The Code of the Woosters (Jeeves and Wooster Book 7) and gave it 3 stars.

I just finished Socrates: A Man for Our Times and gave it 3 stars. This is obviously not Johnson's area of expertise. When there is no historical evidence he substitutes conjecture. He divides the dialogues into real Socrates and Platsoc an ill conceived word for Plato's thought. For no apparent reason he thinks Socrates was nice and Plato mean. A disappointing work for a renowned scholar.
